Excavating <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2015\/01\/05\/jesus-trial-jerusalem-_n_6418582.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">from 1999\u20132000<\/a> underneath an abandoned Ottoman-period prison known as the Kishle\u2014which is part of the so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblicalarchaeology.org\/daily\/biblical-sites-places\/jerusalem\/tower-of-david-museum-jerusalem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tower of David complex<\/a>\u2014Israel Antiquities Authority archaeologist Amit Re\u2019em uncovered the foundation walls and sewage system of Herod\u2019s Jerusalem palace. Tours offered through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tod.org.il\/en\/event\/the-kishle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Tower of David Museum<\/a> will showcase these finds.<\/p>\n<p>Although the discovery of the remains of Herod\u2019s Jerusalem palace <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2015\/01\/06\/living\/jesus-trial-site\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has recently made headlines<\/a>, the finds are not surprising, according to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill archaeologist Jodi Magness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have other remains of the substructure of Herod&#8217;s palace, and its identification as the <em>praetorium<\/em> [the Roman governor\u2019s residence and headquarters] is not new, either,\u201d Magness told <em>Bible History Daily<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h4>Herod\u2019s Palace in Jerusalem<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblicalarchaeology.org\/daily\/people-cultures-in-the-bible\/people-in-the-bible\/titus-flavius-josephus-and-the-prophet-jeremiah\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jewish historian Josephus<\/a> tells us that Herod\u2019s Jerusalem palace complex, begun in the last quarter of the first century B.C.E., comprised a palace with two wings divided by pools and gardens and was protected by three large towers on the northwestern corner of the precinct. Excavations undertaken by different archaeological teams since the 1960s uncovered various remains of the palace substructure, but almost none of the superstructure has survived. In <em>The World of Jesus and the Early Church<\/em>, edited by Craig A. Evans (Hendrickson Publishers, 2011), archaeologist Shimon Gibson, Senior Associate Fellow at the Albright Institute, summarizes the archaeological evidence of Herod\u2019s palace complex in Jerusalem.<sup><a id=\"note01r\" href=\"#note01\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>If evidence of Herod\u2019s Jerusalem palace has long been known, why is it in the news now? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2015\/01\/06\/painful-discovery-pilgrims-are-following-the-wrong-via-dolorosa.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Media attention<\/a>, which has focused on Herod\u2019s palace as the possible location of the trial of Jesus, has coincided with the Tower of David Museum\u2019s opening of the site for tours. of Jesus was held, according to the Gospels<sup><a id=\"note02r\" href=\"#note02\">2<\/a><\/sup>\u2014in the Antonia Fortress in the northeastern part of the Old City. The Antonia Fortress, however, would have been too small to be the residence and headquarters of the governor; its main purpose, furthermore, was to serve as a military observation tower. Scholarly consensus today associates the <em>praetorium<\/em> with Herod\u2019s palace on the western side of the city.<sup><a id=\"note03r\" href=\"#note03\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHerod\u2019s palace was not a building\u2014it was a compound,\u201d Shimon Gibson told <em>Bible History Daily<\/em>. \u201cThe compound was ideal for Roman governors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In <em>The World of Jesus<\/em>, Gibson explains why it\u2019s likely the <em>praetorium<\/em> was located in Herod\u2019s palace complex:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[T]here can be no doubt that on the occasions when [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblicalarchaeology.org\/daily\/biblical-artifacts\/inscriptions\/pontius-pilate-ring-herodium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pilate<\/a>] stayed in Jerusalem, particularly during the Jewish festivities, he took up residence at Herod\u2019s old palace situated on the west side of the city, also known as the <em>praetorium<\/em>. The word <em>praetorium<\/em> might refer to a palace or a judicial military seat, but it is likely that in Jerusalem it referred to the entire palace compound, which on the north included palatial buildings used for residential purposes and on the south, military barracks.<sup><a id=\"note04r\" href=\"#note04\">4<\/a><\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For Christian pilgrims, the identification of the <em>praetorium<\/em> with Herod\u2019s palace might throw off the route taken for centuries to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblicalarchaeology.org\/daily\/people-cultures-in-the-bible\/jesus-historical-jesus\/where-jesus-walked\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">retrace Jesus\u2019 steps<\/a> from his trial to his crucifixion. Called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblicalarchaeology.org\/exhibits-events\/terra-sancta-museum-via-dolorosa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Via Dolorosa<\/a>, or \u201cWay of Sorrows,\u201d the road begins at the Antonia Fortress and ends at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, punctuated in between with seven other stations commemorating events that occurred on Jesus\u2019 way to his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblicalarchaeology.org\/daily\/biblical-sites-places\/jerusalem\/where-is-golgotha-where-jesus-was-crucified\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">crucifixion at Golgotha<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Although the path of the Via Dolorosa has long been venerated, Tower of David Museum director Eilat Lieber <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/middle_east\/archaeologists-find-possible-site-of-jesuss-trial-in-jerusalem\/2015\/01\/04\/6d0ce098-7f9a-45de-9639-b7922855bfdb_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told <em>The Washington Post<\/em><\/a> that she hopes Christians will eventually make Herod\u2019s palace complex near Jaffa Gate a standard destination.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width:33%;\"\/>\n<h4>Notes<\/h4>\n<p><a id=\"note01\" href=\"#note01r\">1.<\/a> Shimon Gibson, \u201cThe Trial of Jesus at the Jerusalem Praetorium: New Archaeological Evidence,\u201d in Craig A.
