This was not even the first time the symbol appeared. It is also visible between the talons of the eagle on a coin of king Ptolemy III Euergetes of Egypte who lived 264-221 BC. It probably symbolizes the crossing of the ecliptis and the equator; the X of Plato.

I have found this very helpful as I try to understand how, when, and why scriptural events have taken place.
